Toniic Annual Global Gathering and 100% Gathering

Love & Evidence

We are excited to host you in the quaint village and delightful climate of Rancho Santa Fe, California for our Annual Global Gathering & 100% Gathering in March of 2020. Our theme this year is the integration of Love and Evidence. Drawing on ongoing developments in the fields of impact investing and philanthropy, we will explore how we each hold this apparent tension in our work. Our goal, for we who make caring for the world a central tenet of our life’s work, is to arrive at a balance and integration that is personally appropriate and fulfilling.

An Invitation from our CEO, Adam Bendell

Dear Toniic Members,

I want to invite you to join us for the Toniic Annual Global Gathering March 15 – 18, 2020.

Those who have attended know the AGG to be our signature annual global event.

It’s a gathering, not a conference — we keep it intimate at around 100 members, and we keep it interactive because there is so much wisdom in the room.

This year’s theme is Love and Evidence.

What’s that about?

It’s about the tension between investing in an idea or entrepreneur you love for its potential impact, and being guided by evidence about what works and does not in practice.

Let’s face it — as impact investors, we love the love part!

And we sometimes let that love cloud our investment judgment……

And yet, we won’t go back to making decisions on “cold, hard facts” that don’t take into account our impacts on our world.

So how do we reconcile being guided by our heart and using our head?

What is the uniquely right balance for you?

Come explore the answer only you can provide at the 2020 AGG, March 15 – 18 in San Diego, CA.

We are hosting this year’s AGG at the Inn at Rancho Santa Fe, a sprawling boutique property in the village of Rancho Santa Fe in San Diego County.  The Inn is now part of Marriott International, and we are taking the opportunity to engage with Marriot’s Head of Sustainability to push progress on their sustainability goals.  You’ll hear about the results of that engagement, too — from us and from Marriott.

For the first year, we are holding a 100% Network gathering right after the AGG — an effort to cut carbon emissions and leverage existing travel.

So many reasons not to miss this … I hope you will join us for our deepest dive of the year.

The Toniic AGG, March 15 – 18. 2020 in San Diego.

With gratitude,

AsB

Program Overview

The 2020 Annual Global Gathering will take place from Sunday, March 15th, 2020 to Wednesday, March 18th, 2020. On the afternoon of Wednesday, March 18th 100%ers will transition to the Toniic 100% Network Gathering that will run until Thursday, March 19th, 2020.

Our Gathering aims to unlock the wisdom of the Toniic community and leverage the collective power of our attendees in fun and unique ways. Each day we’ll explore the theme through plenary sessions, breakout workshops, Toniic signature sessions, lots of open space and interactive storytelling.  We want you to be part of the mix. We also have a few exceptional guests to round out our exploration of Love and Evidence.

Love and Evidence invites a personal inquiry into our own motivations and decision-making process when it comes to investing money, time or other resources toward a cause or issue we care about. We want to address head-on the inclination of well-intentioned investors and philanthropists to support interventions that stir us emotionally, and to point to evidence of which interventions actually work and which don’t to increase the effectiveness of our love.

Agenda Highlights

Love and Evidence

Dean Karlan, Professor of Economics and Finance at Northwestern University and President and Founder of ImpactMatters and Innovations for Poverty Action, will kick off our first full day.  Dean will discuss evidence of which interventions do and do not work across the SDGs, shortcuts to use when an investment doesn’t support bespoke impact measurement, and the current limits to an evidence-based approach. Where do we need to rely on instinct?  What’s love got to do with it, got to do with it?

Carbon Neutral Entire Event!

When we locked in our stay at the Inn at Rancho Santa Fe, a Marriott Hotel, we wanted to make sure they were up to our sustainability standards. We saw areas for improvement and engaged Marriott International’s senior management team. We’ve been working with Denise Neguib, Global Head of Sustainability, Marriott International, who will join us at the AGG to describe Marriott’s robust 9 year sustainability plan and approach and what its been like working with Toniic. Together with the Head of Operations at the Inn we’ve made headway and we’re excited to involve you on this journey as well. AGG20 is proving to be a great case study on the power of engagement to change practices. We will leave the Inn at Rancho Santa Fe a more sustainable property than we found it.  In this session we will discuss how the process.

Storytelling

Love and Evidence- Exploring this theme encourages us to look at how we make decisions as impact investors. Decision making is intrinsically linked to who we are, where we come from – and also linked to our story. How we convey our story is an important part of shaping the growth of the impact investing field (and our personal growth). To that end, we’re building storytelling into the fabric of our Gathering.

We’re calling on a handful of volunteers who want to take the stage and share their ‘Impact Fire Story’ (what lit your personal flame to go all-in on your impact journey). We’ll be sharing our unique template for creating your own Impact Fire Story with plenty of opportunities for everyone to create, practice, share and inspire others with their story.

We’re excited to one of our members who is a highly accomplished journalist and storytelling expert, guide us through a Storytelling for Impact Investors workshop.

Enjoy member led sessions including: a Mountainside Chat: Journey to Impact Session, What the SDGs Forgot: Human Rights in Your Due Diligence, How to Invest Without Making You or Your Portfolio Companies Crazy, The Impact of Ignoring Impact in Your Liquid Investments. We’ll have a Portfolio Deep Dive plus several other rich content sessions.

Systems Change

We’re taking a deep dive into Systems Change, finance and the impact economy. Sandra Seru, US Director with Forum for the Future, will be leading an Introduction to Systems Thinking session and Charly Kleissner will be leading an advanced exploration into the Financial System and the Impact Economy.  Charles Eisenstein, author and systems change agent will be with us as well. He’s an integrative thinker who has a diagnosis for the ills that run deep in the current finance system and offers a set of prescriptions for fixing them that are quite radical in a remarkably accessible way. We welcome your voice to be part of this important dialogue.

We have much more planned including Toniic’s signature Peer Coaching Circles with a Parallel session for Advisor Members and our popular Give and Get Marketplace

Please sign up now to make sure you’re part of our flagship event of the year and book your room (a two step process this year) you can do that here.

Impact Journeybook

AGG20 attendees will all receive an Impact Journeybook (think ‘workbook’) to guide a deeper, more personal experience.  The Journeybook will have prompts for personal reflection, spaces to journal, and queues for followup, and will serve as a memento of the Gathering and a new way to prompt integration into action post-event.

About the Venue

The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe, a boutique property on 23 acres just north of San Diego, is full of eclectic charm and Spanish style comfort. It’s the perfect place to huddle, learn, convene, ponder, integrate, expand, grow, experience, network, build, and transform. The Inn is about 5 miles from the Pacific Ocean and boasts proximity to world-class beaches in San Diego County.

The town’s dark sky policy means better star-gazing for us as we deepen conversations and connections.  Imagine hanging out with your Toniic tribe in the heated saltwater pool or Jacuzzi. Imagine evenings around outdoor fire pits and couches in the tranquil scenery at the Inn sharing your Impact Fire Stories! If what you need is rejuvenation, the Inn at Rancho Santa Fe has you covered with their 3,000 sq ft indoor/outdoor spa. Hiking and biking trails line the property.

The Inn is in the tranquil village of Rancho Santa Fe, a San Diego north county town characterized by lush foliage, towering eucalyptus, winding roads and historic buildings. Hot air balloons float over this hamlet in the hills of horse country. Though just a 30-minute drive from Downtown San Diego and the airport, the town feels worlds away.

The village of Rancho Santa Fe and this Inn have a rich history.  What went from a Mexican land grant to a horticultural experiment resulted in the contribution of Lilian J. Rice’s design prowess to “a community that would contain the simplicity and charm of a Spanish Village.” Rice was a pioneering woman Master Architect who studied at the University of California at Berkeley and was born in the late 1800s.

“Her personal style was informed by her affinity toward indigenous earthen architecture of her region, her personal travels to Spain and other Latin based cultures, and exposure to master architect John Galen Howard at UC Berkeley.” Read more here.

Guests at the Inn enjoy playing privileges at the world-famous Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club, access to the distinguished Rancho Santa Fe Tennis Club, convenience to Del Mar or Solana Beaches, nature trails, and all that San Diego’s North County has to offer. There’s also a naturally lit fitness center on the property.

Place

This land is special and we honor that it is rich in Native American history. Many of the Native Americans in this region were misplaced, forced onto reservations or into Missions. Several tribes are mentioned in this overview: A Chronology of Native Americans in San Diego, California.

Local Farming

We’re working with Smarts Farm, an urban farm and community activation project that uses the Inn at Rancho Santa Fe’s old orchard as their home base to create a hands-on local farm experience. We’re meeting local farmers and are excited to bring real farm to table food that tells a story of its own.
