Foundations that align their endowment investments with their mission are able to meet their fiduciary duty, generate returns, make greater impact and create liquidity in their portfolios. This was the finding of the T100 Focus Report: Foundations on the Road to 100%. The report, released on April 21, 2020, delved into the T100 data set of impact investments in private wealth holders’ portfolios with a specific focus on foundations’ portfolios. Despite being only 23% of the total participants, foundations in this study represent in total $1.7 billion of committed capital, which represents 60% of the total committed capital of all portfolios in the study.
Foundations’ endowments hold enormous potential for impact, yet often lay dormant or work contrary to the mission of the foundation. With an estimated $1.5 trillion in endowment funds worldwide, foundations could be a major force in mitigating crises like the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, catalyzing climate action and addressing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals—yet they have hesitated to invest these funds in line with their missions.
In this webinar, we summarized key findings of the T100 Focus Report and heard directly from some of the participants of the study to hear how they are overcoming misconceptions about impact investing while managing to go deeper with their impact while staying profitable, managing risk, and furthering their mission.
